Understanding Psychotherapists in Alberta: What “Qualifying” Really Means for You

If you’re looking for therapy in Alberta,

you may have noticed different therapist titles, like Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) or Registered Psychotherapist (RP). Naturally, this might leave you wondering:

  • What does “Qualifying” mean?

  • Will this affect my therapy experience?

The short answer? No, it won’t.

At Nurtured Minds Wellness, we know how important it is to feel comfortable and informed when choosing a therapist. Let’s break down what these terms mean so you can book your session with confidence.

What’s the Difference Between “Qualifying” and Fully Registered Therapists?

At Nurtured Minds Wellness, all of our therapists are fully trained and qualified to support you. The difference between a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) and a fully registered RP comes down to supervision—not skill or expertise.

Registered Psychotherapist (RP)

  • Completed all required clinical hours and passed the CRPO registration exam.

  • No longer requires supervision but continues ongoing professional development.

  • Session rate: $190/hour.

Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)

  • Completed their Master’s degree and met all CRPO (College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario) requirements.

  • Receives regular supervision from a therapist—not because they lack experience, but as an extra layer of professional growth.

  • Works independently and provides the same level of care as a fully registered RP.

  • Session rate: $190/hour (same as fully registered therapists).

Choosing a Qualifying therapist? No difference in care. Just extra support for them, same quality for you.

Practicum Student Psychotherapist

  • Currently completing their Master’s degree in psychotherapy.

  • Works under close supervision while gaining clinical experience.

  • Lower-cost therapy option: $60/hour for individuals, $90/hour for couples.

Why Are Some Alberta Therapists Registered in Ontario?

Alberta doesn’t yet have a provincial college for psychotherapists. That means many therapists here register with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) to practice legally.

Many CRPO-registered therapists in Alberta have completed their training at Yorkville University, a well-known online Master’s program in psychotherapy. Even though they are regulated in Ontario, they live and practice right here in Alberta—providing in-person and virtual therapy to clients across the country.
