The Practicum Therapist: the counsellor of tomorrow

Access to affordable mental health services can be hard sometimes, especially when seasoned therapists have long waitlists or your benefits do not cover the cost of counselling. People often look for a therapist with years of experience or credentials behind their names. However, a hidden gem is waiting to support you through your healing journey: the Practicum Therapist, the counsellor of tomorrow. Practicum Therapists offer quality, low-barrier counselling that is accessible and affordable. While they gain experience and work towards licensure, their addition to the clinic offers current and evidence-based techniques and a fresh approach to psychotherapy.

What is a Practicum Therapist?
A practicum student at Nurtured Minds is also known as Practicum Therapist. Our Practicum Therapists are master’s level students who have completed their graduate-level courses and training and are completing their hands-on, experiential training under the supervision of a licensed therapist in our clinic. Practicum Therapists are provided opportunities to observe, learn, and apply theory and knowledge learned in their counselling graduate school programme.

Benefits of Working with a Practicum Therapist

People may be hesitant to work with a practicum therapist because they are new to the field and don’t have as much experience as other counsellors. Working with a practicum therapist at Nurtured Minds offers quality counselling to provide lower-cost services to Leduc and the surrounding communities. Here are five reasons you might want to consider working with a Practicum Therapist:

  • Affordability: they provide reduced-rate counselling, which improves accessibility to mental health services.

  • Availability: with a smaller caseload, they have flexible schedules and no waitlists. This allows you to access counselling promptly.

  • Current: As the counselling and mental health field constantly evolves, Practicum Therapists are up to date with the most recent research, theories, and techniques.

  • Supervision: Practicum Therapists work directly under the supervision of a licensed therapist. The supervisory relationship provides the practicum therapist with knowledge and experience in clinical development while the client has direct access to two counsellors.

  • Perspective: Practicum Therapists provide a fresh perspective and energy.
